Design smart bin system for rubbish and recyclable items to replace the current rubbish bins at Block 34

Smart Bin Design

Pain points of the bins :

  • Smelly and unhygienic

  • Dirty and attracts pest

  • Wasted spaces of the bin

  • Bin feels and looks “unapproachable”

  • Difficulties for Cleaners when they have to change garbage bag and clean the area

Unique selling point :

  • Split body - Helps cleaners to pull out garbage bag horizontally instead of vertically at many corners that the bins are placed in DE strategically

  • Solve smell odours - Special lid design to open in another direction other than the normal lid where smell odour rushes to the nose

  • Insect deterrents - Sufficient fluon tape be placed at the bottom of the lid to deter pests Colour chosen is blue which insects are less receptive to

  • Lid - Extended to hold two bodies of the bin in its place securely without a need for a lock. Kill 2 bird with one stone. When the lid is taken out for a change of garbage bag, the body is able to slides open

  • Aesthetics - Using nice fitted colours together. Meets aesthetic needs, makes bin look more approachable.

Smart Recycling Bin

Pain points of the recycling bins :

  • Many wasted recycling items (plastics, papers etc that mixed with food)

  • Skeptical to recycle because have the fear that someone might steal designs and/or notes on the paper, hence rather throw it in the bin instead - based of interviews

Unique selling point :

  • Hygienic - All 3 main recycling items are dry materials (paper, cardboard, plastic bag). Less likely to be contaminated

  • Easy convenience - Easy drop cardboard into cardboard sections. Paper drop hole is much wider (hole is 4cm of height). Able to drop in a whole lot of papers at once

  • Special non-pick lock - From interviews, it was found that many people are scared to recycle papers as they feared someone might take it - eg. a design student would rather throw away their papers than to recycle. Gives security

  • Public recycling plastic - Something that has high potential of saving many clean plastic bags - one of the most wasted items daily across the world

  • Aesthetics - Meets aesthetic needs, looks minimalist feels (give people the impression that recycling is easy and convenience) .
